CLOSING

If you have gotten this far through the web site, have your life/finances in order and are motivated to make a purchase you may be ready to take it to the next level. As you prepared for this major change of life visits to several large boat shows were made. Large cruising cats were toured. You wouldn’t buy a house without doing a “walk through” viewing many new model homes. You have an idea regarding the cost of a new boat. A charter or two may have been completed in the islands to satisfy your curiosity about livability on these special vessels. After you have seen the new cruising (habitable, as the French say) catamarans at the boat show and felt the full blast of sticker shock, a “preowned” catamaran may be looking good to you. It may be time for preowned catamaran “walk through” excursions. You may want to check out the boats available through The Catamaran Company by viewing their web site: http://www.catamarans.com/ They have a reasonable selection of vessels in the same class as Millennium Dragon. This is a good place to do some price comparisons. Comparison shopping may also be done on the web sites for Multihull World (Europe):

http://www.multihulls-world.com/us/index.php

or Multihulls Magazine (USA):

http://www.multihullsmag.com/

If, at this point you feel Millennium Dragon is near the top of your list of vessels it is time to gather a little more information. Consider traveling to SW Florida to view the Dragon. You could do your walk through as part of a Florida Vacation. The Dragon lives in Punta Gorda, between Naples / Ft Myers / Sanibel to the south and Tampa / St. Pete / Sarasota to the north. As my wife and I are retired, a walk through could be arranged at virtually any time. I have no interest in taking fender kicking tourists out sailing. After meeting some good folks and well intentioned but inexperienced fender kickers, I have placed the Dragon in brokerage with Denison Marine.

The services of a professional broker do not come cheap but they offer valuable services that protect both the buyer and seller. They advertise internationally, qualify the buyer, assure clear title of the vessel, and protect the transfer of funds using their bonded bank accounts. The asking price determined by Denison Marine is similar to the market values assigned by my insurance surveyors. I am offering Millennium Dragon for less than half the price of a new vessel of this size. If you are a qualified buyer please contact Nick Dykert at Denison Marine to arrange to view the Dragon.

If you are still interested after viewing the boat you will be expected to make an offer to purchase. If accepted, your earnest money will be deposited in the broker’s account. Once this is done a sea trial may be arranged. If you are satisfied with the sea trial we will arrange for haul out so your own surveyor may evaluate the Dragon and provide you with a purchaser’s survey report. I certainly would not consider investing a significant portion of my assets in a live aboard sailing vessel without having it hauled at a professional boat yard and surveyed by a qualified multihull marine surveyor. You will be responsible for the cost of the haul out and marine survey. This cost will be deducted from your earnest money. With the Surveyor’s report and cost estimate from the yard in hand you will have all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding the purchase. If something unforeseen is discovered by the yard personal or your surveyor, you may want to either walk away or re-negotiate your final purchase price to incorporate the upgrades or changes you specify. I will be happy to re-negotiate the price regarding any structural issues discovered by the yard or surveyor. Cosmetic issues and any upgrades you want addressed during this haul out will be out of your pocket. If your surveyor discovers any easily repairable minor structural issues, and you determine to proceed with a new negotiated offer, a substantial down payment will be required. Boat yards are capable of performing minor and major structural repairs but the the cost of any work is seldom classified as “minor”. Pending the results of your marine survey your choices will be:

  • Conclude the deal for the price offered.
  • Negotiate price reduction for any necessary repairs ** discovered by your surveyor.
  • Walk away from the deal, your earnest money, and your down payment.

Keep in mind earnest money and any down payment are nonrefundable. After all, if you back out of the purchase without funding the haul, surveyor, and your requested marine repairs, the boat yard doing the haul out and any negotiated specified work would not waste time chasing you (out of State or out of the USA). They would simply put a lien on the Dragon.

If our purchase agreement is closed for the initial asking price you may want to take advantage of the offer I make in the section “Dragons Lair” that allow you time to personally prepare for your sail off into the sunset.
